Go!

“The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing." Socrates

Brian Pursley, the pastor at Lakeside Community Church where I attend, begins each message anecdotally. Today, the story was about an interaction with one of his sons at the dinner table. Brian was using the conversation to steer his boy into seeing he could be responsible, and he had what he needed. He simply needed to get on his feet and go.

When Jacob learned that there was grain for sale in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why do you look at one another?” And he said, “Behold, I have heard that there is grain for sale in Egypt. Go down and buy grain for us there, that we may live and not die.” Genesis 42:1-2 Jacob was letting his sons know the same thing Brian told his boy. There is a solution. Now go!

I was convicted. Brian drove the point home when he said how we often want God to fix, renew and provide things when we already have what we need. I have some areas of struggle that resurface again and again. The pattern is the same, varying to different degrees. I come up with a plan. When it is not successful, without much effort on my part, I come up with plan B.

This is why I began with the quote I chose. Eventually, as ridiculous as it may sound, once I realize how little I know, I can begin living out what I do. What do I know? I know God has given me life, here and now, and eternal life in Christ. I know God is good. I have been given a mind to gain, and although less than in the past, an ability to retain things I’ve learned. Rather than doing things for me, God has given me the freedom to choose. Will I do it my way or apply his wisdom and direction? I know God loves me too much to eliminate negative consequences and allows me to learn (or not) from those consequences.

So now what? What is the takeaway?

●  Apply what God has already taught me.

●  Stop expecting God to do for me what he has given me the tools to do myself.

●  Go!

What about you? What has God already shown you and you’ve not applied it in your daily living? What have you wanted God to do for you? Are you ready to “go”?
