God of Wonder
- June 18th, 2025
"Many, Lord my God, are the wonders you have done, the things you planned for us. None can compare with you; were I to speak and tell of your deeds, they would be too many to declare.' Psalm 40:5
Going back to Genesis, you will read multiple “God said” statements. God said let there be light, sky, sea, vegetation, sun, moon, stars. Creatures that swam and walked and flew. And God spoke and created mankind. God spoke a blessing over them and gave them the world, a world that offered them an unlimited, unstained relationship with Him. This amazing God who spoke all of life into being, gave them the best of everything.
You most likely know how drastically things changed when the first humans created, chose to go their own way. No longer would they be in a perfect place and given complete access to our Creator God. Their choice changed them. Our Creator was and is, the God of wonder. They changed. God did not change; God has not changed and never will! Knowing this leaves me filled with wonder. As it should.
Back in 2000, Caedmon’s Call and Third Day wrote and performed ’God of Wonders’
Lord of all creation; Lord of water, earth and sky
The heavens are your Tabernacle; Glory to the Lord on high
And God of wonders beyond our galaxy; You are holy, holy
The universe declares Your majesty; You are holy, holy
Lord of heaven and earth; Lord of heaven and earth
So early in the morning; I will celebrate the light
As I stumble in the darkness; I will call your name by night
God of wonders beyond our galaxy; You are holy, holy
The universe declares Your majesty; You are holy, holy
Lord of heaven and earth; Lord of heaven and earth
Hallelujah! To the Lord of heaven and earth
The heavens and earth declare God’s glory. Have you ever seen a star filled sky on a clear night, somewhat removed from artificial light, and had your breath taken away at the beauty? God knows the stars by name and where each one is. He knows how many grains of sand are on any shore, anywhere in the world. Those little house sparrows, common to most backyards, high rise balconies and big box warehouses? God knows when just one of those sparrows falls.
“Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory in the heavens.
Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.
When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?
You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor.
You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet:
all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild,
the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.
Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!” Psalm 8
Yes, our God is wonderful and fills us with wonder. I have lived on the shore of Lake Michigan for the majority of my life and I have never stopped being filled with awe, struck by its sheer beauty and magnitude. Sunrises and sunsets are stunning and what about the color explosion of the flowers and music of the birds? Hummingbirds in flight or hovering at a feeder defies logic. Oh sure, human intellect has learned from nature and applied the knowledge inventing and perfecting tools for health, life, and travel. God spoke His creation into being. There was no pattern to follow. God’s creation became a pattern for us to glean from.
God of wonder. Wonderful God. Today. Right now, in this moment God is good. The world is in a tension like never before and hearts are faint. Now, more than ever, does the beauty and glorious wonder of God need to be embraced and celebrated. Because when it is all said and done, our wonderful God will remain.
How has our God of wonder shined into your life today? I’m attaching a couple of pictures to show you what has brought me joy, from our God of wonder. Share your thoughts, stories and pictures in the comment box below.
